Convinced he was born to fly, Lucas spends hours watching birds and airplanes, studying up to design his own set of wings. But life doesn't always take the path we think it will, and it definitely doesn't for Lucas--every design fails. Until, that is, his mom puts a book in his hands one day, and Lucas learns to fly in an entirely new way.
The watercolor and pencil illustrations are gentle and muted, carrying us along through the book as we watch this curious child come into his own. With every new book he reads, Lucas sores through the pages, showing readers everything from a flock of pink flamingos to the jungle to even space (where he meets Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's Little Prince). We watch the pile of books grow and grow as Lucas demands more adventures and more experiences, and we even get to flip the book at one point because the pile of books is so large.
