THE DEPTH OF THE LAKE AND THE HEIGHT OF THE SKY

The Depth of the Lake and the Height of the Sky by Jihyun Kim is a wordless story exploring the serenity of nature.

A family of three--two parents and a young boy--packs up their belongings, hops into the car with the dog, and sets out for the countryside to visit the boy's grandparents. As the parents settle in, the boy and dog wander around the local forested area until they find a dock on the water. The boy goes for a swim, sunbathes for a little while, and then heads back to his grandparents' cabin where the family eats together. The boy and dog end the beautiful day by stargazing together on the porch.

Every spread is a single, full-bleed scene, which keeps the pacing of the day's adventures peaceful and quiet. The illustrations were created using writing ink and slow-dry blending medium, and they're all done in grayed-out shades of blue. The varying grays are clearly made from mixing blue with its complementary color orange, and the orange undertones add a warm, sunny glow to each spread that enhances the summery scenes.
