Favorite Endies

Also known as endsheets (or "endies"!), endpapers are the papers at the beginning and/or end of the book that are glued to the inside cover. If books have two two sets of endpapers (front and the back), the pasted down page is called the pastedown endpaper, and the loose paper is called the free endpaper or flyleaf endpaper.

Sometimes endies are a solid color, but often they have images or patterns printed on them that tie into the story. Even more exciting, the front endies can look different than the back endies! When the images are different than each other, it can serve a few purposes, including acting as illustrated bookends for the visual narrative, starting/ending the illustrated story before the first/after the last page, and sometimes even providing key additional information. As such, endies can be an essential part of the storytelling experience, and there's lots of room to get creative.
