I CARRY YOUR HEART WITH ME

Debut illustrator Mati McDonough has recently re-released her adaption of the famous ee cummings poem "I Carry Your Heart With Me" in board book format, and it's somehow even more magical than her picture book version.

McDonough presents cummings' famous poem through the lens of a mother-daughter relationship, which feels extra poignant given the new board book format. We see the mother and child bond from pregnancy through early childhood, exploring the nature and wonder around them as each line of the text unfolds. The two characters express their unequivocal love by never letting go of each other: mom and daughter are always holding hands or hugging, and the animals around them tend to mimic their behavior. The illustrations encourage physical affection and demonstrate the enormity of the love a parent and child feel for each other. Literally! We get fun little collaged hearts!

Speaking of which, the collage-style illustrations are sweet and colorful, taking readers on a unique journey through a familiar poem. We see unrelenting and everlasting love portrayed with all sorts of colors, fabrics, and textures, showing that love can be found anywhere and everywhere. The design of the book is crisp, and the lettering of the title on the front is embossed so readers experience an extra fun tactile aspect of the book.

I Carry Your Heart With Me publishes in board book format August 22 from Cameron Kids.
