Let's Talk Illustrators #96: Amy June Bates

Written by Lesléa Newman and illustrated by Amy June BatesGittel's Journey took my breath away simply from the cover: it's clear that this is the story of a strong girl coming to America, and as she looks forward hopefully, it's as if she is gently urging readers to open the book and read her tale. Amy was kind enough to chat with me about how she created the illustrations for Lesléa's text, and I'm pleased to share that here. Enjoy!

Let's Talk Illustrators #95: Jessie Sima

Jessie Sima's books are consistently hilarious, well-designed, and full of heart. They evoke a sense of warmth as her characters discover how they fit into the grander scheme of things, and I was thrilled to get a chance to chat with Jessie about her fourth picture book Love, Z. If you thought narwhals and penguins were cute, wait until you meet Z!

Let's Talk Illustrators #94: Elise Peterson

In Brontez Purnell's The Nightlife of Jacuzzi Gaskett Jacuzzi balances "normal" childhood issues like not fitting in at school and wondering if people in galaxies far, far away have it easier than he, with watching his younger brother for hours at a time and coming to grips with hating his mother's boyfriend. Although the story is technically fiction, these are real issues experienced by children every day. Add in Elise Peterson's mixed media collage illustrations, and the entire story suddenly feels like a scrapbook: the story becomes even more grounded in reality because not only is the story relatable, but the illustrations themselves are photos pulled from Elise's own life. It was an honor to chat with Elise about her process for bringing this story to life in a visual way.

Let's Talk Illustrators #93: Cecilia Ruiz

I'm excited to kick off a new year of illustrator interviews by talking to Cecilia Ruiz about A Gift From Abuela. Previously, Cecilia has created two picture books, The Book of Memory Gaps and The Book of Extraordinary Deaths: True Accounts of Ill-Fated Lives, but this is the first book she has made for children, and I'm delighted that I got a chance to interview her about this book specifically. Happy new year, and enjoy!

#kidlitpicks December Round-Up: 10 Rhyming Reads

I spy with my little eye something that rhymes with BOOK. How many words can you come up with? LOOK, COOK, HOOK, TOOK...

During December the @kidlitpicks book club was on the hunt for the best rhyming reads to share with our kiddos! We all know that reading WITH our children is one of the greatest gifts we can give them, as it opens up their world to so many different ideas and perspective, BUT did you know reading rhyming books is one of the best ways to help your child develop phonological awareness and rhythmic language?

The more rhyming books we read with our children the better they become at recognizing, identifying, matching and eventually substituting, manipulating and producing rhymes themselves. This assists them greatly with language development and on the road of learning to read. Plus rhyming reads are just so much fun and an excellent way to get the whole family engaged in read aloud moments that everyone will enjoy!

Thanks to Teri from Petit Book Corner for rounding out a year of wonderful kidlitpicks themes!
