THE HIKE

The Hike by Alison Farrell is the sweet story of three kids (and a dog) who love hiking more than anything in the world.

Readers meet Wren, El, Hattie, and Bean the dog, who set off on an immaculately-chronicled hike through the forest to see the sunset at the peak of a mountain. Each child contributes something different to the hike (El teaches them how to make leaf baskets, Hattie's good with maps, etc.), so each child experiences something uniquely personal.

The text is part narration, part annotations, so the book feels like a diary entry detailing a beautiful and transformative day––in fact the backmatter is designed to look like Wren's sketchbook, as she is the artistic maven of the group. There is such a strong sense of energy to the illustrations as the text winds its way around nature, always moving forward and making space for itself no matter how dense the surroundings might be. And the hike itself proves worth it, with a stunning sunset scene at the end.

The Hike published from Chronicle Books last month! And here's a peek underneath the dust jacket!
