THE WHOLE WORLD INSIDE NAN'S SOUP

The Whole World Inside Nan's Soup by Hunter Liguore and Vikki Zhang celebrates the intersection of family, community, and food!

Nanni is making something special in her big pot, and when her granddaughter asks what it is, Nanni tells her it's seeds. Confused, the granddaughter asks how there can be seeds in the pot, and Nanni proceeds to tell her about how the food they eat today is a product of hard work and love and how their family garden has been passed down for generations. Nanni tells the girl that all of this history -- along with present-day treats like the sun, and honeybees, and even a bus -- are in the pot and contribute to their lives. In essence, everything is connected, and Nanni shares her gratitude with her granddaughter as she makes a soup.

The illustrations were created in watercolor and rendered in Photoshop, and there's no doubt that the book has a classic storybook feel, often utilizing blocks of text amidst full-bleed spreads full of muted colors and highly decorative imagery. Many pages even feature traditional storybook borders with elaborate ribbons and flowers creating square or circular frames around particular pages and spreads. Zhang's imagery heavily features nature throughout, focusing on including every bit of the world that contributes to Nanni's soup.
