Big and Small and In-Between by Carter Higgins and Daniel Miyares shows readers that the world is full of wonderful things, big and small and in-between.
Separated into three (but secretly four) sections, Higgins and Miyares explore life and the collections we make. Readers experience big things like the donut your brother got before you could get it and the bravery you feel when you jump into the pool without floaties. They acknowledge the smaller things in life like half birthdays and old droopy balloons. And they see the in-between things like the lights that stay in our eyes after looking at sparklers and the goldfish who really and truly listens to our stories.
The graphite and gouache illustrations are an incredible combination of delicate and energetic, with bright colors used softly and in abundance. Miyares has a chance to explore all sorts of techniques with this book, from utilizing negative space to making beams of light sparkle off the page. But perhaps the most exciting part of the book's design is the different paper folds we see on the section headers. Decreasing in intricacy and size as they go, they perfectly build up to the bonus surprise chapter and gatefold at the end of the book. The impact of the gatefold is amazing after all that!
Big and Small and In-Between published earlier this week from Chronicle Books! You can also read an interview I did a few years ago this illustrator, Daniel Miyares, here!
