LISTEN

Listen by Gabi Snyder and Stephanie Graegin encourages readers to do just as the title says: listen.

The world is a noisy place, it's true. But sometimes, if you take a deep breath and listen hard enough, you can break through the dogs barking and cars honking and shoes slap-slap-slaping against the pavement find a sense of peace in the city. As a young girl moves through her day -- from home to school and back again -- she takes time to appreciate the noises around her. Each noise she hears becomes part of a larger soundscape that helps keep her grounded in her thoughts and actions no matter what distractions are going on around her.

Graegin sticks with mostly cool colors for the spreads, heavily featuring calming shades of blue and blue-gray. The illustrations were created with Adobe Fresco, Adobe Photoshop, pencil, and watercolor, and there is a softness to Graegin's textures. Sound words in the images and "noise words" in the text appear in various shades of orange, yellow, and red, delicately complementing the blues, and key imagery throughout is also highlighted in shades of orange.
