Let's Talk Illustrators #91: Jeremy Holmes

I have been waiting a long, long time to talk to Jeremy Holmes. I can actually tell just how long it's been because I've wanted to talk to him since the moment I saw There Was An Old Lady, and that came out in 2009 (if you don't know it, buy it. Trust me.). Now that Jeremy has stepped into illustrating picture books (he's done some chapter books), I'm excited to talk to him about his general illustration process, and that starts with this year's The Eye That Never Sleeps: How Detective Pinkerton Saved President Lincoln. Enjoy the conversation––I know I did!

Let's Talk Illustrators #90: Jordan Crane

Recently I had the opportunity to sit down and talk to author-illustrator Jordan Crane about his brilliant comic We Are All Me. We Are All Me was designed to be a comic for intended to be comics for brand-new readers, and it provides not only a fantastic introduction to the style of comics and how to read them, but it also explores the genesis of mankind and the interconnectedness of everyone here on Earth. As you'll soon see, Jordan's answers are illuminating and thought-provoking, so without further preamble, here is our conversation!

Let's Talk Illustrators #89: Leah Tinari

Today I'm talking to Leah Tinari about her author debut Limitless: 24 Remarkable American Women of Vision, Grit, and Guts. There are many books coming out in these trying times about women who have paved or are paving the way for future generations, but the visual aesthetic of this one had me hooked from the cover. And wait until you read about how labor-intensive these portraits were to make (paralleling the hard work of the women actually featured in the book). Come learn about some marginalized female voices with me.

First Friday 5: Determination

This month I'm spotlighting some comics with characters who are determined to have the lives they envision for themselves and those they love. The characters in these books show fierce determination to take control of their own destinies and make things happen, no matter the cost to their social lives, livelihoods, and often their own personal safeties.

#kidlitpicks October Round-Up: 12 Middle Grade Favorites

Picture books often get all the glory in the kid lit world, but it feels like middle grade novels are having a moment. So what is "middle grade"? Middle grade is generally written for ages 8-12, with less gritty content than their YA counterparts (i.e., no profanity, violence, or sex). They are a marvelous segue from picture books and early readers into longer, more complex stories, and they encourage independence, imagination, and confidence. It's a blast to watch kids of that age read on their own. So here's to a month-long celebration of middle grade novels!

Last month’s @kidlitpicks was MIDDLE GRADE! Special thanks to Miranda from My Book Bloom for choosing to celebrate the glory of books for middle schoolers!
