Potato Pants! by Laurie Keller is as earnest as the title suggests and, yes, the need for potato pants in this particular story is quite urgent.
Potato is excited and for good reason: today, and only today, Lance Vance’s Fancy Pants Store is selling potato pants! Potato leaves early to get there so he will have the pick of the litter, but when he spots an eggplant through the window he's beside himself. Why is there an eggplant in the store? Eggplants don't wear pants! Everyone is walking out with their new pants while Potato searches for other avenues of getting his pants––other than going into the store where the eggplant is––but before he knows it there's only one pair of pants left and he's running out of time!
This book is so. Much. Fun. It's great as a read aloud, but it's also great for a solo read––the text and the illustrations are equally engaging and pair very well with each other. Keller used a wealth of media to create the illustrations including markers, colored pencils, pen and ink, acrylic, collage, and (of course!) potato stamps. This combination of so many textures, colors, and levels of opacity make each bit of the illustrations feel special and unique, and of course the colored speech bubbles make for a fun aesthetic, especially during the read aloud. And check out the eggplant's pants! What's not to love?
Potato Pants! publishes from Henry Holt and Co. on October 2, 2018. And here's a peek underneath the dust jacket!
